FWJ Spring 2026 – Resilience & Resistance

In a time of tyranny,  the most important issue is how to survive—even thrive—in spite of it.  So we asked various friends, “What makes you happy?  What gets you out of bed each morning?  If everything in your world were going smoothly, what would you most like to be doing?”  The answer across the board was “to be creative.”  Since creativity is not limited to visual, literary, or performing artists, we came up with the idea of a Creative Convergence—a gathering of creative people from many fields with the intent to resist oppression through demonstrating resilience.

Santa Fe, however, is a vortex of creativity, with events taking place year-round. This presents a challenge:  how to draw people from so many places for such a gathering and how to fit it into our city’s overflowing event schedule?

So we decided to use Four Winds Journal as the focal point, enabling both locals and individuals from around the world to share how they manage to maintain balance, stay resilient, and live fully despite opposition or discouragement.  According to George Herbert, “Living well is the best revenge.”  Resilience, therefore, is also a form of resistance.

This issue of Four Winds Journal offers multiple views on both active resistance and the more passive but equally effective practice of resilience.  Among the articles, poetry, and artwork, we’ve included a link to Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl Halftime video as a stirring example of both.

We are also including an In Memoriam section, dedicating this issue to the life of an artist who has worked with and supported us in ways too numerous to mention:  Linda Hunsaker Hardman.  Linda lived a life of resilience despite overwhelming odds and has gifted the world with her courage and inspiration, as well as with her art.

We hope you’ll enjoy this issue, share it with others, and use it as a springboard into your own “happy place,” however that may appear.
